Tower blocks dominate the Newtown skyline.

Newtown is a mix of industrial units and housing estates close to the centre of Birmingham. The original back-to-back housing built for the workers of the industrial revolution was demolished and replaced by high-rise flats in the 1960's.

Before the demolition. A quick demolition.
The City Challenge initiative of the 1990's demolished some of the 1960's tower blocks and renovated others. New houses were built and parks created.

In 2002 five more tower blocks were demolished and the land awaits redevelopment.

After the demolition

Many of the original factories have closed or moved on to be replaced by smaller units. Lucas used to be the largest employer in Newtown and during the war years it's site was a prime target for the Luftwaffe.

Newtown is an area of constant redevelopment.
